How to use the OPNBar - instructions

Three tools in one box. The OPNBar Version 4 5th Wheel Release Version includes the V4 large-mouth container leverage bar, a 5th wheel release pull hook and a detachable extension bar. Open shipping container doors and release fifth wheel pins without crawling under the trailer. Made in the USA.

What's in the Box

  • OPNBar V4 large-mouth leverage bar
  • 5th wheel release pull hook
  • Detachable extension bar

Choose your size: the bar comes in regular, short or long versions. After ordering, email us which one you want.

Release the 5th Wheel with Less Reaching

Reaching under a trailer to pull the fifth wheel release is awkward and can leave your clothes covered in grease and road grime. The pull hook lets you reach the release handle from a standing position.

Open Stuck Container Doors

Attach the extension bar to the V4 and you have a longer leverage bar for opening and closing shipping container doors that are rusted, stiff or iced over. The large, deep mouth fits rubber-sleeved and triangular handles, and the double ergonomic grip gives you control.

Features

  • Fits triangular container levers as well as standard and rubber-sleeved handles
  • Large, deep mouth with more bend for wider compatibility
  • Double ergonomic grip for two-handed control
  • Breaker bar, cheater bar and torque bar for stuck latches and doors
  • Works on shipping container and truck trailer doors
  • 5th wheel release pull hook included
  • Detachable extension bar included for extra reach and leverage
  • Extension-ready for upcoming OPNBar extensions
  • Made in the USA by SCS International

How to Use It on a Shipping Container Door

  1. Start with the right-hand door. On standard containers it overlaps the left door, so it opens first.
  2. Lift the locking handles out of their retainers.
  3. Seat the OPNBar's mouth over the handle, pushing it down as far as it will go.
  4. Attach the extension bar if the door is badly stuck and you need more leverage.
  5. Pull the long end of the bar with steady force, using your legs and body weight rather than your back. The lockrods turn and the cams release.
  6. Remove the bar and swing the door open while standing to the side, in case cargo has shifted against the door.

To close, swing the door shut, seat the bar on the handle and push it back into its retainer. The same steps work on truck trailer doors. For every handle type, the extension and the 5th wheel hook, see How to Use the OPNBar. For more tips, including iced-over doors, see our complete guide to opening a stuck shipping container door.

Designed With Operators in Mind

Trucking, cargo and insurance companies lose billions of dollars a year to operator injuries, and about half of all trucking injuries are sprains and strains. OPNBar tools are designed to let you use leverage instead of jerking on stuck doors, latches and hitches by hand, to help reduce strain on your back and shoulders.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?
Regular is the standard V4. Short (14" extending to 34") is lighter, and long (22" extending to 42") gives the most leverage. Email us your choice after ordering.

How do I open a shipping container door that's stuck?
Seat the OPNBar's mouth over the door latch handle and pull on the long end of the bar. The extra length gives you more leverage, so you can turn the lockrods with a steady pull instead of yanking the handle by hand. For a full walkthrough, see our guide to opening a stuck container door.

Safe Use

  • Use the OPNBar for container latches and other intended leverage tasks. Don't use it as a pipe extension on wrenches or tools not designed for that force.
  • Inspect the tool for wear, cracks or damage before each use.
  • Wear gloves, eye protection and proper footwear.
  • Make sure the bar is securely seated before applying force, and don't exceed safe force limits.
