How to use the OPNBar - instructions

For containers with closely spaced lockrods. The OPNBar Version 5 is a tight-clearance shipping container leverage bar. Its dual leverage holes are designed to fit between closely spaced lockrods where a standard bar may not, and it has a built-in 5th wheel release hook. Made in the USA.

Two Leverage Points. Built for Tight Spaces.

On some containers the lockrods and handles sit so close together that a standard bar may not fit. The V5 has two engagement holes, so you can pick the position that fits and apply controlled leverage to a stubborn handle while keeping your hands farther from potential pinch points.

Features

  • Dual leverage holes for two engagement positions
  • Fits closely spaced lockrods and handles
  • Wide, deep mouth fits rubber-sleeved handles
  • More pronounced bend for compatibility across container door styles
  • Improved center grip for control
  • Works on shipping container and truck trailer doors
  • Built-in 5th wheel release hook
  • Extension-ready for upcoming OPNBar extensions
  • Made in the USA by SCS International

How to Use It on a Shipping Container Door

  1. Start with the right-hand door. On standard containers it overlaps the left door, so it opens first.
  2. Lift the locking handles out of their retainers.
  3. Seat the OPNBar's mouth over the handle, pushing it down as far as it will go.
  4. Pull the long end of the bar with steady force, using your legs and body weight rather than your back. The lockrods turn and the cams release.
  5. Remove the bar and swing the door open while standing to the side, in case cargo has shifted against the door.

To close, swing the door shut, seat the bar on the handle and push it back into its retainer. The same steps work on truck trailer doors. For every handle type, the extension and the 5th wheel hook, see How to Use the OPNBar. For more tips, including iced-over doors, see our complete guide to opening a stuck shipping container door.

Designed With Operators in Mind

Trucking, cargo and insurance companies lose billions of dollars a year to operator injuries, and about half of all trucking injuries are sprains and strains. OPNBar tools are designed to let you use leverage instead of jerking on stuck doors, latches and hitches by hand, to help reduce strain on your back and shoulders.

Ergonomic Design

The OPNBar is designed around the way your body moves when you open a stiff container door. It extends the door latch handle, so you can use a steady pull from your legs and body weight instead of jerking the handle with your wrists and back. Watch the OPNBar ergonomic trucker tool in use:

FAQ

How do I know if I need the V5?
If your bar can't fit between the lockrods or handles on your container doors, the V5 is designed for that situation. On standard doors, the V3 or V4 is usually enough.

Will it fit handles with rubber sleeves?
Yes. The large mouth fits over rubber-sleeved handles, so you don't need to cut the sleeve off.

How do I open a shipping container door that's stuck?
Seat the OPNBar's mouth over the door latch handle and pull on the long end of the bar. The extra length gives you more leverage, so you can turn the lockrods with a steady pull instead of yanking the handle by hand. For a full walkthrough, see our guide to opening a stuck container door.

What are OPNBar extensions?
We're developing add-on extensions for extra reach. This bar is designed to work with them when they're released.

Safe Use

  • Use the OPNBar for container latches and other intended leverage tasks. Don't use it as a pipe extension on wrenches or tools not designed for that force.
  • Inspect the tool for wear, cracks or damage before each use.
  • Wear gloves, eye protection and proper footwear.
  • Make sure the bar is securely seated before applying force, and don't exceed safe force limits.

The user assumes all risks of improper use. The manufacturer and distributors are not liable for damage, injury or loss caused by misuse. See our full Company and Products Disclaimer.
